The Westcott Community Center, Greater Syracuse Works, MACNY/NAM and our other collaborators and partners are pleased to announce the start up of our New York State Department of Labor Emerging and Transitional Worker Training Initiative program.

This Training program will be offering those persons over 18 years of age, who meet other criteria as well, a myriad of programming and support in order to remove the barriers to employment and help them be successful in being trained in, and obtaining recognized certification. in the following:
  1. The National Work Readiness Credential
  2. The Work Keys National Career Readiness Certificate
  3. Training options below                           
        Other services include case management (5 locations around the City of Syracuse),  job readiness classes, employment placement and follow along, possibly other training/certification options available, GED assessment & classes, substance abuse counseling, and many other services.

ICT Training Options

Life Skills and Career Development in Construction Trades through Matawon Development
The program offers certificates in OSHA, Lead Worker Safety training and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. Provides life skills education and construction training on bid specification reading, mold awareness, and contract development. 4 weeks from 7am until noon, M-F. No tolerance for late attendance Feb. 1st, 2010 March 8th 2010 (more dates to come) HS diploma, drivers license, background check, health screening, application and interview. Union apprentice, general contractor, subcontractor, laborer, weatherization and insulation specialist.

Health Care Training through Pathways to Paychecks Program
Program provides participants with access to a 60-hour healthcare training program with unpaid internship.  Program is provided through a partnership between CNY Works, Loretto and SEIU. 3 week program (60 hours)

 Must complete vocational assessment, be willing to be drug tested prior to employment and have background check completed. Entry level positions in patient care (HHA, CAN, LPN), clerical, maintenance, food service, technical positions—all in health care settings.

Churchill Environmental, Inc. Asbestos Courses with EPA/ NYS Accreditations
Worker/ Handler program provides training through lectures and participatory learning methods to prepare to perform all types of asbestos work.  The Contractor/ Supervisor Program is designed for Supervisory staff overseeing asbestos handlers Classes range from 32 hours to 40 hours over the course of one week

Handler:  Feb. 23-26th  

Contractor Supervisor:  Feb. 15-19
More dates to come.		 Must be able to read and write.  No other pre-requisites noted. Work in Construction and trade fields.

BOAT Program through the Women’s Opportunity Center- (Business and Office Administrative Training)

Intensive classroom training with internship for final 3 weeks. Topics include computer applications (Microsoft Office Suite), business writing, phones, filing, workplace culture & more 5 week classroom, 3 weeks unpaid internship. M-F 8:15am-4:30pm April 2010, July 2010 and October 2010 HS Diploma or GED and proficiency in English:

Machining Program at OCC (partnership between OCC and OCM BOCES)

Entry-Level Machinist

Higher level training program with multiple possible certifications in these areas:  Measurement, materials and safety, job planning, benchwork and layout, manual milling, manual turning between centers, manual turning with chucking, manual surface grinding, manual drill press operation.  Includes introduction to CNC Machining 500 hours of training, 30-40 hours weekly, 12 to 13 weeks. Late Spring 2010 (will update as soon as date is available) 10.9 level on TABE, Silver level on Work Keys Entry level machine operations

Welding: Production Welder
Shielded metal arc welding or Stick Welding.  Welders need great hand/ eye coordination, physical stamina, and need to perform well under pressure.  Students will take AWS certification when done 2 week classes at BOCES, days (Times to be determined) July 12th, 2010 and July 26th, 2010

National Association Of Manufaturing Endorsed Production Technician at OCC
The Manufacturing Skills Standards Council awards CPT certificates to individuals that pass any or all of the 4 production modules:  Safety, Quality Practices and Measurement, Manufacturing Processes and Production, and maintenance awareness. 140 hour program to complete all 4 certifications.  Individual certificates will take 35-40 hours to complete. Late Spring or early summer 2010 Career Readiness Certificate (Bronze Level with Work Keys assembler, machine operator, and production technician
